6 Foods You Should Eat for Healthier Hair!

September 17, 2017

Hello ladies, Nestasia here. Let’s talk hair health.

You may be taking great care of your hair on the outside by applying good products with quality ingredients and maybe even weekly deep conditioning treatments... But what about the inside? What you eat and drink everyday has a GREAT effect on the health of your curly tresses.

Our hair is mostly made of protein and in order for it to prosper, we must provide it with the proper vitamins and minerals. Such nutrients could be found directly from the food that we eat. Listed below are not only just a couple of foods that I found to be key to healthy hair growth, but foods that I’ve seen pretty good results with my hair. Keep reading to find out how you can take better care of your hair from within!

Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are the bomb. I started consuming chia seeds about two months ago and so far it’s been pretty darn amazing! Chia seeds are super rich in omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 and are an excellent source of fiber. They are also high in antioxidants, iron, protein and fiber. Because of these awesome nutrients, chia seeds promote healthy hair and even healthy skin!

I consume chia seeds in the form of a drink. Others consume it by taking a tablespoon and eating it like that. I just prefer to consume chia in the form of a drink because there are many ways you can change it up to your liking. You can find and purchase chia seeds at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and maybe even your local supermarket. Just make sure that it is verified USDA organic, just so you can receive all of the benefits chia seeds have to offer. During my time drinking chia seeds, I’ve noticed that that roots of my hair feel softer and look shinier. I consume chia seeds by taking a cup and filling it up with nice cold water. Then, take 2 ½ tablespoons of chia seeds and put them into the water. You’ll notice that they’ll float on the very top of the water. Just give them 5-10 minutes to sink and to develop into their gelatin coated-like state. For flavor, I like to squeeze half a lemon. Mix it up a little and voila! You can even put your chia seeds in fruit infused water!

If you are a lazy (me sometimes) and don’t really want to create your own chia seed concoction, I recommend buying Mamma Chia beverages!!

They are super awesome and very very delicious. Mamma Chia beverages come in many flavors like strawberry lemonade, pineapple coconut, cherry lime, pomegranate mint and so much more! I’m currently loving the blackberry hibiscus flavor.

You will be getting just a many benefits drinking Mamma Chia drinks just as if you were to make your own. They are USDA Organic, caffeine free, gluten-free, and vegan! You can find Mamma Chia drinks at Target, Walmart, online, and maybe your local supermarket. I found some at a local Q Market.

Blueberries are one of my top favorite fruits to eat. They are so yummy and jam packed with nutrients beneficial for hair health! Blueberries contain this chemical called proanthocyanidins that feed your little hair follicles to thus promote healthy hair growth! Blueberries also carry vitamins A, C, and E. Fun fact: believe it or not, blueberries can actually slow down the process of hair aging. So that means zero grey hairs! Purchase blueberries at your supermarket. Eating them just the way they are is great, but I love to get creative and make them into a smoothie!

Whether it’s almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, pistachios, peanuts.. They one of the main components to promoting healthy hair growth. Nuts are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, biotin and even selenium (mostly found in brazil nuts). Selenium is known for promoting healthy scalp and even prevent hair loss. Eat nuts sparingly, as they contain high calorie content.I like to mix cashews and walnuts to my fruit salads. If you’re a trail mix lover, I recommend you try out Power Up’s awesome trail mix. They come in a variety of combinations! My most favorite one from Power Up is ‘Goji Power’.

You guys, avocados are super helpful! I absolutely love love love avocados. I try to eat half of an avocado every single morning for the best results! Avocados are packed with vitamin E, fatty acids, monounsaturated fats, high levels of protein and vitamin B- all of which that will fortify and grow your hair! Slicing avocados and then incorporating them into your salads, or as sides to your dishes is a great way to eat them. Or you can just eat it as is.

Citrus Fruits

Vitamin C plays a big role on the health of your hair and scalp. Consuming citrus fruits like oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, lemons, and limes will most definitely help you out a ton. Other than vitamin C, citrus fruits contain fiber, flavonoids, potassium, folate, and vitamin A. The list goes on. Citrus fruits really get the job done for hair growth.

My most favorite citrus fruit would have to be the grapefruit!

They’re so sweet and sour and very juicy. You can make fruit infused water with citrus fruits, make fruit juices with citrus fruits including other fruits as well, or you can just eat them as they are!

I love spinach very much! It amazing and is jam packed with vitamins K, A, C, B2, B6, B1, E, manganese, zinc, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids! These nutrients will ensure healthy hair growth. I incorporate spinach with my salads, I even put spinach on  the side of my fruit bowls. Be a little creative and make a juice with spinach in it! Spinach reminds me a lot of when I used to watch Popeye cartoons.

Him and his spinach LOL.

I hope you’ve enjoyed and I hope that these foods help you with achieving healthy hair growth!
